Individuals who teach in a higher education setting have to both keep up with new technologies but also ensure they adequately communicate ideas and methods from the past. In addition, these teachers have the important job of inspiring creativity and new ways of thinking in their students, giving them the chance to blossom intellectually.

As a result, one internet-based tool is beginning to enjoy popularity amongst college faculty, according to a recent survey.

Researchers with Faculty Focus asked around 2,000 individuals involved in higher education about their use of Twitter, and whether they feel this micro-blogging site can be of any use.

Over half of the respondents indicated that they chose not to use Twitter but around a third said that they have had the chance to at least try out the site.

Of this group, a total of 71.8 % of users feel that they will increase usage over the coming school year, and a further 21% responded that they do log on to the site frequently.

For those interested in becoming a professor or simply teaching in higher education, the Bureau of Labor statistics anticipates that postsecondary education positions will grow by 23% until 2016.
