The role of the teacher is one of inspiration and leadership. A career in teaching involves enlightening young minds in the ways of the world and preparing them for the future. Modern technology offers many tools to try and help a teacher in their quest to educate as best as possible. Google has thrown its hat into the ring to try and provide tools and services that help educators. Google has produced the Google Apps Education Edition, which is a free suite of hosted communication & collaboration applications designed for schools and universities. The site is accompanied by two community-driven sites devoted to the project. The first provides resources for educators using Google Apps, including community discussion, tutorials and tips. The second, according to Christopher Dawson, technology director for the Athol-Royalston School District in northern Massachusetts, is centered on the use of Google Apps in the classroom. It provides lesson plans and templates as well as examples. Employment of school teachers is expected to grow by 12% between 2006 and 2016, about the average for all careers nationwide according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This would mean 479,000 additional teacher positions during that time. |
