With the government expected to continue hiring for federal security jobs, Amarillo College in Texas said it will soon begin offering classes in homeland security for students looking to add a specialized degree in criminal justice to their resume.

The college said it will implement the criminal justice degree option in homeland security with plans to eventually launch a full program in the future, the Amarillo Globe News reports.

With the homeland security option, which is slated to begin in the fall semester, Amarillo College will be one of only a handful of Texas community colleges to offer classes in the specialty subject.

Michael O'Connell, vice president of strategic planning for C3, a division of one of the largest security companies in the world, told the news source that the college needs to offer these types of classes because of the growing demand for law enforcement and overall security services.

"It would help place graduates not only overseas, but also here in domestic jobs," O'Connell noted. "We think this is something that is just starting to evolve.”

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, occupations in homeland security include border patrol agents, cybersecurity and telecommunication specialists and immigration officers.
