For those interested in adding a specialty to their resume for work in the criminal justice field, a new armed security course is being offered in Fort Edwards, New York.

The new school, which is being launched by former Glen Falls Police Chief Joseph Bethel and former Police Captain Lloyd Swartz, consists of two segments including an 8-hour security guard course and a 47-hour armed security course. Both courses begin February 25 and will run through March 11, according to the Glen Falls Post Star.

Bethel told the news agency that the course will give participants, who will need to obtain a pistol permit beforehand, the training they need to become state-certified for work at banks, for armored car companies and as armed security guards.

"There are a lot of young people looking for work, and this is an option," Bethel said.

"It's an industry that's growing quickly because of the lack of resources you're seeing with police departments these days," Swartz added.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for security guards are expected to be favorable, increasing by 14%, through the end of the decade.
