The economy has taken away many jobs that were once thought to be recession proof. However, one city is planning to reach out to laid off police officers and offer them their jobs back.

According to the Tulsa World, the city finished making its first attempt Tuesday to contact everyone who was laid off from the police department to offer their jobs back. At least 53 officers out of 88 that were eligible to be recalled, will return to the Tulsa Police Department on July 16. Five officers declined the offer.

The news source says that the rehires were possible due to the high number of retirements during this year, and because the police union approved a pending contract with the city last week.

However, before the 53 police officers return to work, they need to re-qualify for their firearms, make sure that their training up to date in accordance with regulations, and have a full physical to ensure that all officers are in shape before rejoining the force.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of people in the police force is expected to increase by 10% between 2008 and 2018.ADNFCR-1502-ID-19855143-ADNFCR
