Individuals who are interested in a career in law typically begin working as a law clerk, as it can provide experience for climbing the ranks. Law clerks provide assistance to judges by researching issues and providing background information. Although many judges opt not to use them, some believe that they can help balance the workload. Because many judicial systems are facing a heavy caseload without enough workers to handle the responsibility, some courts are looking to boost law clerk employment, according to TimesUnion.com. The Town Court in Colonie, New York, is facing a shortage of employees, causing many to ask for extra help to handle cases. "As of November 2009, we ranked 22nd in criminal case volume," the town's senior justice, Peter Crummey, told the news provider. "This is different from any other town and village justice court." Although law clerks may be considered to be assistants, they are still well compensated for their efforts. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, law clerks have the potential to make up to $30 an hour in salary. |
