Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) has launched a new online program for those looking to add a speciality degree in mental health on their resume in order to work in the clinical psychology or counseling field.

The schools said the new bachelor's degree program with a concentration in mental health will help students understand aspects of human behavior through a combination of online work and real-world experimental learning opportunities.

Dr. Peter Frost, professor and chair of SNHU's department of psychology, said the program will help students develop strong communication and critical thinking skills needed to work in a clinical environment.

"Courses are designed to bridge the gap between theory and intervention associated with community mental health," Frost noted. "Students learn principles about therapy and assessment and then apply their knowledge through field experiences."

Frost said the program will prepare students for future gradate work, as well as for careers in a variety of fields including rehabilitation and education. He said many SNHU gradates with advanced degrees on their resumes in psychology have found jobs in mental health clinics, social services and human resources.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for psychologists are expected to grow by 12% through 2018.
