Counseling Careers Help Others Into Dream Jobs

23 September 2008
Working in the field of career counseling can be a rewarding job helping others into professions of their own.

Danette McGuire, a career development coordinator with a university counseling and career service, said helping students find their own dream job is the biggest reward of hers.

She told PNT Online that no two days are the same in the job and she can find herself giving presentations, meeting one-on-one with students or handing out resume and interview tips.

The most important qualities for a career counselor are an ability to relate to other people and "a desire to see them succeed".

In her own case, Ms McGuire said the most rewarding part of the profession is seeing her students find their own career path.

"It is fun to watch them grow, make decisions on their own and mature into adults. It is so rewarding to help them find their dream job," she commented.

According to the Department of Labor, school and career counseling are one of a number of fields qualified graduates can enter. Other counseling roles include mental health support, rehabilitation, marriage and family therapy, and gerontological counseling, which involves helping elderly people and their families adapt to changing lifestyles.

In 2006, the department's figures show there were 635,000 counselors in the US. Their median average earnings in May of that year were $47,530.
