The study of the human mind - how it works, how it breaks and how it can be healed - is at the core of psychology. Those with careers in counseling have developed many different approaches to get at the root of how and why people think and feel the way they do.

Some psychologists theorize that our busy technological lives have increasingly separated us from nature and that consciously reconnecting with the natural world would benefit the psyche. This theory of eco-psychology is the basis for the practice of a mental health counselor in Churchville, Virginia, who offers workshops focused on active engagement with nature.

"People have this perception that they are disconnected from nature," mental health counselor Kate Guenther said to DNROnline. "We know we're a part of it intellectually, but we have to realize that we are a natural part of everything and reopen that connection."

The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that there will be a much faster-than-average job growth for mental health counselors, 30 percent over the decade from 2006-2016 as the profession adds approximately 30,000 jobs over that time.ADNFCR-1502-ID-19263335-ADNFCR
