A nonprofit program called Creating Futures is working to help veterans build the skills necessary to pursue careers in information technology.

The program is offered by the CompTIA Education Foundation, which announced that more than 10,000 veterans, disabled veterans and their spouses had applied for the program in the past month. The foundation also announced that it was seeking donations from companies and others to help expand the program.

"Veterans can combine their combat preparation training with IT skills to make rock-solid employees. Our partner companies have found that veterans are ready for the changes that new technology creates and are mentally prepared to work in a team environment," John Venator, CEO of the foundation, said in a statement.

The foundation also cited statistics showing many chief information officers are planning to increase hiring over the next three months, creating more opportunities for anybody interested in pursuing an IT career.

For one job category, computer and information systems managers, the Bureau of Labor Statistics cites strong growth potential in the coming years, predicting a 16 percent increase in demand for these workers.
