New York Senator Charles E. Schumer said he will be asking for federal funding to help finance a new $3.5 million cloud-computer center at Marist College in Poughkeepsie. The school recently partnered with IBM to push for the construction of the New York Cloud Computer Center on the campus, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. Schumer said that the new center would help create local jobs for professionals with high tech experience on their resume and help develop future generations of workers with knowledge of cloud computing. "Cloud computing at Marist isn’t just pie in the sky, it means jobs on the ground in Dutchess County," Schumer stated. "This incredible project tapes two of the Hudson Valley’s greatest resources, IBM and Marist, in a tandem effort to create hundreds of jobs in one of the fastest-growing high tech sectors in around." Schumer said the college would support job growth at IBM, as well as a number of other large local companies by ensuring that businesses take advantage of the cloud center's technical offerings. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that job opportunities for computer network, systems and database administrators are expected to increase by 30% through 2018. |
