Technology has advanced incredibly over the past decade. Back in the 1990s, it was a surprise to use the internet, and now many people access the web through their mobile phones. New programs are constantly appearing and computer languages are used to develop the latest software and operating systems. The computer programming field is believed to be fairly male-dominated and in order to introduce more women to this profession, one school initiative is starting early. According to the Chattanooga Times Free Press, a group of employees from Unum, a company that provides insurance and long-term care solutions, came together to teach middle school girls about computer programming. The session was held at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in the computer lab and the young ladies had the chance to work with the program Scratch, that introduces younger students to programming concepts through drawing and imaging programs. For those who hope to one day enter the computer programming field, the Bureau of Labor Statistics anticipates that the opportunities for those with degrees in this area will be excellent. The growth rate will decline only by 4% until 2016. |
