The generation of young adults known as Millennials has begun to develop new workplace expectations as they meet layoffs caused by the recession. The communications agency network Lumin Collaborative, which consists of five marketing and public relations firms, recently conducted a study examining the attitudes that 1,000 Millennials, aged 18 to 27, have regarding their future careers. According to the research, 55 percent of the cohort has experienced a layoff or loss of work in their family within the past year, and about three-fourths feel threatened by a layoff in the coming months. Furthermore, 66 percent of Millennials say they have lowered their expectations of being promoted, compared to 51 percent among other age groups. Despite these fears, the demographic is increasing their credit card debt more than any other generation. According to Mark Raper, CEO of Lumin Collaborative, "Changes in Millennials' workplace expectations and how they envision professional success will have a major impact on how companies recruit, retain and grow this generation throughout the workforce. They are an invaluable part of the domestic and global economy, so it behooves all employers to pay attention and adapt alongside them." According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Millennials make up 19 percent of the U.S. population. |
