President Obama has called for a commitment to service by the youth of America, and they seem to be listening to his call. According to a poll of 18-24 year old college students and recent graduates conducted by the internship nonprofit The Washington Center for Internships and Academic Seminars, almost two-thirds (65%) of respondents said they are more likely to pursue a career in public service, given the new administration. "It is clear from this survey that Obama-mania has created a significant interest in public service among the emerging workforce," said Mike Smith, president of The Washington Center. The survey also showed a general level of approval for Obama's policies so far in his first 100 days. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says that between federal, state and local governments, there were almost 10 million jobs in public service in 2006 and that number is expected to change much through 2016. Those numbers do not include public service jobs such as the post office, workers with the intelligence agencies (those numbers must be kept classified for security reasons) or any of the nongovernmental organizations specializing in public service. |
