The media industry has taken a major hit because of the economy and the number of people who are turning to the internet as a means of getting their news. Because of this trend, many media conglomerates have reported seeing low figures in terms of revenue. Similarly, a number of companies have lost advertisers as firms are forced to cut their spending. The Washington Post has had to make cutbacks in order to deal with the lack of advertising. This measure has been taken by a number of media outlets. However, it appears to have paid off for the Post, as they recently saw a rise in profits, according to The New York Times. The company's earnings for the fourth quarter was $82.2 million, a surprising turnaround from the $18.8 million it earned one year ago. This may mean that careers could be on the way for out-of-work individuals if the company continues to see a profit. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 53% of reporters work in the newspaper industry.  |
