People who love the process of arranging, carrying out and closing a deal could be perfect for a career in the real estate sector.

Daryl Crotts, who has several years of commercial real estate experience, told the Wichita Eagle that he is a "deal junkie" and that he loves "seeing things come together".

He explained that much of his success in the real estate industry is due to his ability to forge connections with other brokers in the area.

Prospective real estate agents could boost their knowledge and increase their employability by pursuing a degree course. Typical subjects of study in a real estate degree - which is offered at more than 1,000 universities and colleges - include financing, property development and management, and business.

Employment in this sector is expected to increase by 11% between 2006 and 2016, according to the Department of Labor (DOL), as a result of increased housing needs as the population grows. However, the profession is very competitive and job-seekers should be ambitious, well-presented and adept at networking.

The most recent data available DOL indicates that the median annual earnings of salaried real estate agents are $39,760 - though this can vary considerably based on location, experience and employer.
