Professional sports stars are known for their hefty paychecks worth millions of dollars. Because playing sports is so physically demanding, many athletes retire at a young age because their bodies just can't take it anymore. While their salaries may be enough to last them a lifetime, many athletes turn to other ventures upon retirement, such as investments or sports broadcasting in order to stay active.

Baseball player Nomar Garciaparra, a six-time All-Star infielder, recently announced his retirement from the sport and plans to start a career as a sports analyst for ESPN, according to CNN. Garciaparra had signed a one-day contract with his former team, the Boston Red Sox, and then announced his retirement in a press conference.

While Garciaparra admitted to the media that he wouldn't feel like he was retiring until he put on his Red Sox gear one more time, which is why he signed the one-day contract. During the press conference, he talked about his excitement for becoming a broadcaster.

"I hope to have a long career in broadcasting," Garciaparra said, according to USA Today. "But it's not easy, and I've never thought it was."

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, broadcasters can earn more than $156,000 a year in annual salary.ADNFCR-1502-ID-19662507-ADNFCR
