Some entrepreneurs have found that starting a small business can be a good idea even during a recession.

A recent article in U.S. News and World Report offers some tips on getting started in the current economic climate.

The report points out that people hoping to launch a career as a small business owner can take advantage of lower rents and labor costs during a recession, and that many people are being motivated to take the step towards entrepreneurship because of their own recent job losses.

The report also notes that businesses that depend on consumer discretionary spending in the current climate may face more challenges, compared to something like a repair shop or job counseling service that would be more in demand during a recession.

People can also find out more about starting their own business from SCORE, an organization that lends its business expertise to new entrepreneurs. The group says that it helps create 25,000 new jobs each year through the mentoring it provides to small businesses, and that just over 500,000 entrepreneurs benefited from their services in fiscal year 2008.
