Business Careers Less Attractive To Teens

A recent poll finds that fewer teenagers are interested in pursuing a career in business in light of the current economic climate.

In the recent survey by the group Junior Achievement, careers in engineering or science and "doctor" are now tied for first place in career choices by teens aged 12-17. Other popular options included "entertainer," "professional athlete" and "teacher."

Business careers were in fifth place this year, although Junior Achievement notes that over the past five years, that had actually been the top choice of teenagers. The organization suggests that engineering and science and healthcare careers may be seen as more stable by the teenagers, as well as lucrative.

"With all that has happened lately in the financial sector, it is possible that teens are unsure about careers in the business. However, we know that business - especially small business - is the greatest job creator and is going to be a crucial part of the economic recovery," said Jack Kosakowski of Junior Achievement in a statement.

Despite the lower popularity of business careers among teens and others, there is still demand for professionals who have sound business skills, while a large number of business-minded people continue to try their luck at running their own businesses.
