A career in business finance and accounting can offer successful graduates key positions within the boardroom, as well as world-leading salaries.

According to the Global Salary Survey from Management Today, finance directors in the United States are the highest paid in the world, earning an average of around $669,130 a year.

This puts them ahead of counterparts in other major and emerging economies in United Kingdom, Brazil, Germany, France and Japan.

In addition to the high salaries on offer for successful business finance workers, the publication also said the role is one of the traditional paths to becoming a company chief executive.

Becoming a finance manager can be the road to a directorship in the field and according to the US Department of Labor, this usually requires a bachelor's or master's degree in finance, accounting or a related field.

Finance managers help to prepare financial company reports, assist with direct investment and implement cash management strategies.

DOL statistics show there were 506,000 finance managers in the US in 2006, with average earnings of $90,970 in May of that year.

The number of finance manager jobs are expected to grow by 13% between 2006 and 2016.
