The slumping US economy is making it challenging for job hunters across the country to secure a position but for those in the field of accounting, there are still opportunities to be had away from the epicenter of the crash, Wall Street.

Accounting positions have just been ranked in the top 10 jobs with the highest demand for new recruits in September.

The survey, from internet recruitment specialist Jobfox, found a "strong showing" for these positions in sectors away from Wall Street, despite banks, lenders and other financial institutions going through some tough times.

Indeed, the accounting profession's resilience has seen it maintain a position in the top 10 alongside the traditionally "recession-proof" occupation of nursing, the site said.

Other positions included in the Jobfox report include sales representatives and business development professionals, software design and development, database administration, mechanical engineering and administrative assistants.

According to statistics from the Department of Labor, accountants and auditors held around 1.3 million jobs in 2006. The sector is predicted to grow by 18% in the decade to 2016.

In May 2006, the average median earnings for the profession was $54,630, with the top 10% of accountants bringing in over $94,050.
