While accounting may not be for everyone, there are two women in Utah who have spread their love of accounting, and sparked an interest in the profession among their students.

According to the Salt Lake tribune, Susan Nielsen and Julie Banta were recognized by the Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants for bringing real world accounting applications into the class room.

Nielsen was awarded the “Champion of the Professional Award,” and received $1,000 and Banta won the “Rising Star Award” and was awarded $500.

“I love accounting. It’s important that everyone have a basic knowledge of it,” Nielsen told the news source. “I run into former students all the time, some of whom became accountants and they tell me I was the one who got them interested in it, and that’s so nice to hear.”

Both teachers explained that it is important for students to understand that accounting is much more than just number crunching.

“Accounting is the foundation of business. So, I thought, why not prepare kids for the future,” added Banta.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of accountants is expected to increase by 22% between 2008 and 2018.ADNFCR-1502-ID-19892974-ADNFCR
