While many industries have been hit hard during the economic melt down, one seems to be faring better than the rest. According to the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) 21st Annual Salary Survey, the accounting job market has remained steady and resilient during the economic crisis. "The findings of this year's Salary Survey are very promising in light of the current economic recession. Accounting proves to be a strong profession with excellent career and earnings potential," said Jeff Thomson, IMA president and CEO. Consistent with past years surveys, accountants that hold multiple professional certifications such as the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) and Certified Public Accountant (CPA), earned more than those who were not certified. The survey was mailed to a random sample of IMA members in December 2009, and was conducted by David L. Schroeder and Lee Schiffel, professors at Valparaiso University and Ken Smith, professor at Willamette University. The IMA is an association dedicated to working with accountants and financial professionals in business to become business advisers by playing an active role in their organizations success, according to the company website. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the accounting industry is expected to increase by 22% between 2008 and 2018. |
