A congressional committee held a hearing this week on the impact the recession is having on arts and music organizations across America.

According to the House Education and Labor Committee, this is one of three planned hearings that will focus on how the bad economy has affected those who are pursuing careers in the arts, as well as other entities such as communities and schools.

"Arts and music organizations are facing tough realities, which has a multiplier effect on workers and communities who rely on these sectors to create jobs and generate local revenue," said committee chairman George Miller in a statement.

The committee noted that last year, nonprofit arts and culture industries supported about 5.7 million jobs and generated over $104 billion in household income last year. The committee says that more than 1,000 arts businesses alone in the Miami area support 23,000 jobs, while in Utah, the state's Shakespearean Festival generates about $35 million in local revenue.

Overall, those who pursue careers in the arts will find fierce competition, the Bureau of Labor Statistics points out. However, many who do begin careers are likely to enjoy the satisfaction and independence that can come with it.
