Young designers are asked to assemble scraps of cloth and a medley of colors into an article of clothing which is practical and often provocative. These professionals may understand that a shirt not only can keep someone warm and comfortable, but can also inspire confidence during a night out. A budding website developed by two young fashion industry hopefuls has aimed its business at making high-end fashions available to those whose budgets restrict their style. With the new company, Rent the Runway, woman can rent dresses from designers like Proenza Schouler for about 10 percent of the dress' price at a retail store, the New York Times reports. A four-night rental can cost a customer between $50 and $200 dollars, with the option for $5 in damage insurance. Similar to mail-order services like Netflix, the online business delivers the dresses directly to its customers' doors, and allows them to return their items in prepaid envelopes. Founded by Jennifer Hyman and Jennifer Carter Fleiss, two recent graduates of Harvard Business School, the service has already signed up more 20,000 women. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that employment of fashion designers will rise 5 percent in the decade leading up to 2016. |
