How to Write an Accountant Resume

Accountants are highly sought after professionals that are frequently hired by large public accounting firms, individual companies, the government, and a variety of other entities. When looking for an accounting job, the first thing that you need to do is put together a solid resume. A good accounting resume will impress employers and give you the best possible chance of landing an interview and getting hired. Use these tips to make your resume the strongest it can be.

 

Highlight Your Certifications and Education 

Many of the large public accounting firms will want their employees to have a CPA, or at least the education needed to take the exam. If you have already passed a portion or all of the CPA, then this should be listed near the top of your resume. If you don’t have your CPA, then you should discuss your education experience, including where you went to school, what level of a degree you finished with, what your grades were, and whether or not you presently could qualify to take the CPA. If you have received any additional acknowledgments or academic awards, then these should be highlighted as well. 

Discuss Relevant Work Experience

 While most accounting firms are interested your educational background, they will also want to see that you have some relevant work experience as well. If you have worked as an accountant in the past it is important that you highlight all of the responsibilities that you have had and any work achievements and awards. If you are applying for your first accounting job straight out of school, focus on any internship experience you may have had, and your business/accounting experience in school. 

 Tailor Your Resume to the Job 

There are a wide range of accounting specialties, including financial accounting, tax, auditing, consulting, and more. Each of these has different job requirements and functions. When you are planning a resume for a specific job, your education and experience should be tailored to address the needs and requirements of that job. 

Proofread and Edit 

Employers looking to fill an accounting position will have many different resumes to filter through and they will need to find ways to automatically get rid of some of the applications. In many cases, the easiest way to do this is to get rid of resumes that have errors. You should read through your resume several times to ensure that there are no spelling or grammar errors.
