What a Healthcare Manager Wants to See On your Resume

While positions vary widely in the healthcare field, there are still some common accomplishments and job responsibilities across all departments, from physicians to RNs to emergency management teams. Regardless of the specific facility or job you’re pursuing, most healthcare managers will be interested in seeing clear evidence of the following skill sets and areas of experience. Make sure these details are included in your resume and you’ll be more likely to make it to the next stage of the selection process.

1. A proactive approach to patient care.

Above all, mangers will want to skim through a resume and see clear evidence that you put your patients first. This starts with experience: Have you handled challenging cases first-hand and developed a strong philosophy based on your own patient and client interactions? And it covers areas related to judgment, resilience, and flexibility. When your decisions or diagnoses go wrong, or your patient outcomes are poor, do you learn and grow as a result of these events? 

2. Experience with patient education.

Can you communicate clearly with patients and their families regarding diagnosis, treatment details, and care plans? This is an important aspect of almost any healthcare career, but it also speaks volumes about your written and verbal communication skills, which can influence your relationships with teams and coworkers.

3. Treatment planning experience.

How often have you been involved in the treatment-planning process? Can you review a patient’s condition and decide which tests and assessments are required before prescriptions and other interventions are determined? Healthcare managers prefer candidates with strong observation skills and close attention to detail when it comes to mapping out patient-care plans.

4. Regulatory compliance.

Regulations that influence the healthcare industry change frequently. Has your career taken you through any significant regulatory changes related to health information privacy, record management, or standards related to care and practice? If so, how rapidly did you adapt to these changes? Healthcare managers like to see evidence of flexibility and fluidity in the face of regulatory shifts. If you were at the forefront of any of these changes or took a leadership or educational role in order to help coworkers adapt to the shift, even better. 

5. Tech savvy.

In addition to regulatory changes, new advances in technology also bring rapid shifts in the healthcare field. Are you staying on top of systems and software utilities related to record keeping and patient privacy? Are you familiar with applicable diagnostic and treatment technologies in your area? Can you talk about how technology has had an impact on your career and your overall patient outcomes?  

6. Experience with chart or case administration.

Chart and case administration are also important aspects of most careers in the healthcare field. If you have experience managing patient progress from the beginning of a treatment plan to the end, and you can read and make sense of charts, test results, and medical histories, your potential employers should see evidence of this on your resume.
