Having an outstanding resume can immediately set an applicant for a prep cook position apart from the competition. You should strive to clearly communicate your training and experience to give hiring managers a sense of whether you will be an asset to their kitchen operations. As you prepare to apply for your next position, review our prep cook resume template for Word and tips for writing each section, from the summary statement to skills, work experience and education or training.
Writing Your Summary Statement
The summary statement goes at the top of your resume and provides kitchen hiring managers with the highlights or greatest hits of your resume. Emphasize no more than three major points about your skills, experience or training. You do not need to write in complete sentences, and you might want to consider formatting this section with bullet points. Look at the sample summary statement in our prep cook resume template for Word and consider including the following information:
* The length of your kitchen experience and training
* Relevant roles you filled
* Soft skills or character traits that suit you for a prep cook position
Prep Cook with over three years of experience. Worked in a five-star Italian restaurant and a popular steakhouse. Reliable and dedicated employee.
* Experienced prep cook with five years of experience
* Top-notch knife skills and butchering techniques
* Culinary school coursework with focus in meat preparation
Two years of experience working in kitchens. Trained in garde manger and dessert preparation. Current culinary school student with one year left in degree program.
* Prep cook with three years of experience
* Background in kitchen and full bar prep
* Night owl capable of working late and overnight shifts
Writing Your Skills Section
As you write your resume, look back over the course of your career or training and think about the skills you gained along the way. Ideally, you will be able to identify areas in which you made significant improvements or learned useful skills at each position you have held. You might want to include a mix of hard and soft skills – think of these as technical and personal – to give hiring managers a better sense of what you would be like to work with in the kitchen. * Describe 6-8 skills with a few words or short phrases
* Put skills that are most relevant to the prep cook job description near the top of your list
* Use bullet points for organization

Writing Your Work History Section
Whether you have worked as a prep cook before or are new to the field or the foodservice industry, your work history section is where you tell the story of your career. Organize this section in reverse chronological order, and try to indicate you have sought positions of increasing skill or grown more specialized in certain food preparation methods or tasks. * Start with your current or most recent position and continue on to describe previous jobs
* Include a mixture of duties and accomplishments for each position
* Look for ways to include metrics or otherwise quantify your experience
A few suitable entries for the work history section on a prep cook resume could include:
* Decreased prep time for saute station by 30 minutes per shift
* Butchered and prepared more than 60 chickens per shift
* Specialized in shrimp and oyster shelling and safe handling procedures
* Mixed 10 salad dressing recipes daily
* Worked overnight shift smoking barbecue
Writing Your Education Section
The education section is where you should list any culinary training or food safety certifications you have obtained. This section should start with your most recent credential or degree and continue backward in time through earlier training or education. * Describe any culinary training or certifications, the year you obtained a degree or other credential, and the granting institution.
* Mention any pertinent areas of specialization.
* Unless you are a recent graduate, you do not need to include your GPA.
