What It's Like to Work in the Veterinary Field
With a degree from a four-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program, you have many options. Veterinarians don't just work with dogs and cats. They also treat a variety of pets including birds, rabbits, rodents and reptiles. They examine animal patients, perform surgical and medical treatments, diagnose diseases and vaccinate against disease. In rural areas, they usually work in a mixed animal practice, while others specialize by species and become equine or avian veterinarians. Other career options include emergency and critical care, teaching or research.
Veterinarians are animal lovers first, and the satisfaction of helping sick or injured animals can't be overstated. Beyond the satisfaction, the career tracks are abundant and the skills are transferable. Vets can work in private practice, classrooms, hospitals, aquariums, farms and hospitals. With the wide variety of options available, the Veterinary field offers rewarding work. It is also a very competitive field.
