I graduated from Kapiolani Community College with a degree in Secretarial Science and since then I have continuously been employed in that field. Though most of my career experience has been working in law firms, I feel my overall strengths would be useful in any office environment.
My career has taken me from working as a secretary in a large construction company to a word processing operator when the computer industry was in its infancy to a supervisor in the word processing field and then becoming a legal secretary and finally an Administrative Assistant to the Vice President for Legal Affairs at the University of Hawaii.
I was one of a team of 7 operators. This was the beginning of the "computer" era and all attorneys and secretaries did not have their own computers. When I started working there we worked on giant IBM OS-6 word processors. We used large 5-1/2 " magnetic "discs" to store our documents on and we "printed" our documents on magnetic cards that had to be taken to a large printer that read those cards and printed them out on paper.
My employment with McCorriston Miller Mukai MacKinnon started as the Supervisor of their Word Processing Department. I supervised 4 others. As the Supervisor I was tasked with the intake of all assignments and making sure that each assignment was done quickly, efficiently and on time. We did document assembly, transcription and also worked off of hand-written notes to compile legal documents. We would ordinarily handle the larger assignments that had short deadlines.
After 7 years as the Word Processing Supervisor I was given the opportunity to become a Legal Secretary working for a Partner in the Litigation Section.
