Highly organized and experienced writer/editor with superb interpersonal skills and extensive media contacts. Areas of expertise include web and print content development, interviewing, copy writing and public speaking. I am seeking a position that will provide growth and new direction for my writing and editing talents.
As an award-winning reporter and writer for People, I have covered hundreds of stories in Utah, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Montana, California, Colorado, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico, Arizona, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Ohio and Canada. Versatility is a must to work for one of the world's highest-circulation magazines. I have tackled high-profile crime stories, natural disasters, medical and science profiles, small-town heroes and celebrity interviews. Prior to writing extensively for People, I was a part-time stringer for the magazine for 12 years while working in the newspaper business.
Highlights include coverage of the O.J. Simpson trial and cover stories on Elizabeth Smart, the pop star Prince and Unabomber Ted Kaczynski.
In addition to excellent reporting, writing and editing, the job requires stellar research skills, a demand for accuracy, the ability to find fresh and intriguing story ideas and the capability to handle multiple projects on tight deadlines. I have developed team-reporting strategies for trials and breaking news, helped set up complicated photo shoots and worked with the magazine's publicity department to coordinate stories with NBC's Today Show and CNN. I have also written and edited material on deadline for People.com.
I wrote the popular "Free Lunch" column for the newspaper's front-page local section, focusing on the lives of everyday Utahns. In later years, I took photos or videos of each person I interviewed and was responsible for my own editing, headlines and captions.
As one of the magazine's 10 contributing editors, my specialty was in-depth human interest, medical, science and Drama-in-Real-Life features. Among the highlights: An exclusive interview with a climber who risked his life to save a stranger on Mt. Everest and the saga of adventurers who survived a shipwreck in the Antarctic.
Working for Reader's Digest required top-notch interview and research skills and the development of multiple first-rate sources. I rewrote stories for RD.com, participated in podcasts, negotiated for exclusive story rights and coordinated coverage with the magazine's photo and publicity departments.
As a general interest columnist for the Inland Northwest's largest daily, I traveled extensively to find the "little" stories that don't usually see print. I wrote three columns a week for the front page of the local section.
After breaking into the news business in high school as a writer for the teen "In" section, I was quickly promoted to general assignment reporter and worked my way up to write three human interest columns a week.
I spent eight years as a feature and special projects writer, covering a variety of in-depth issues. In addition to my writing duties, I was editor of The Tribune's weekly, zoned feature supplement for three years, overseeing a staff of six reporters, coordinating photo assignments, writing headlines and laying out a 12-page section.
I have written and edited numerous features for Family Circle, AARP Magazine, American Educator, In Style, Allure, Teen People, Australia's Who Weekly and USA Today.
I have also written ad copy and created brochures for Zero Gravity, a Salt Lake City graphics design firm, and helped design magazine projects for Utah's Morris Travel Agency.
Working closely with the Hotchkiss & Associates Agency in New York City, two of my magazine stories were recently selected as movie projects for Hallmark and Lifetime television. As a movie consultant, I assist screenwriters with script details and am responsible for research and accuracy.
