Utilization Management

Communicates with Emory Healthcare Medical Directors, Blood Bank Supervisors, Laboratory staff, and Blood suppliers to facilitate effective utilization of blood product inventory.

Monitors system-wide platelet inventory and transfers of products in/out of inventory.

Structures product standing orders for each facility according to patient population and transfusion rate. ?

Process Development and Improvement

Designs policies and procedures to streamline Emory Healthcare's Transfusion Services Department to optimize their  blood management.

Monitors transfusion rates, product transfers, expiration rates of products, and ordering practices to help identify issues and variances in each transfusion service department.

Provides new market product information to Laboratory Supervisors and Transfusion Services Medical Director in order to address changes that will benefit facilities in cost reduction.

Train technologists and supervisors on new Blood Supplier order management software.

Reporting/ Data Management

Creates excel spread sheets and pivot tables for monthly, weekly, and daily product usage, product transfers, and product wastage.

Structures monthly reports on each facilities usage and reduction percentages for Laboratory Administration and Laboratory Management. These reports are then used to adjust product orders with suppliers or how blood products are transferred by each facility.

Provides Turn Around Time reports of Stat and Routine samples to Laboratory Manager.

Coordinates supplier billing with patient billing on antigen negative blood products to capture monthly reimbursable expenses.

Problem Solving/ Decision Making

Coordinates with Laboratory Supervisors and Technologists to resolve issues with product transfers and billing.

Communicates with Blood Supplier Sales Account Manager about issues with shipments, billing, and documentation that affect transfusion services operations.?

Implementation of a System-Wide Program to Reduce Platelet Wastage.

       Predicted Savings FY15: $600,000. Actual savings FY15: $700,000

       Predicted Savings FY16:$60,000. Actual savings FY16: $132,00, ytd.

Improve Efficiency of Antigen Negative RBCS with Inventory and Utilization Management

            Results: Decreased ordering by 32%, cost by 29%, unintended recipients by 15%.

            Role: Collaborated with a four person team to outline the specific project deadlines and expectations. Organized data and calculations that should be highlighted to identify if improvement was achieved. Participated in monthly meetings to update project status and implement objectives for the next phase of the project design.

In the process of creating a new Antigen Negative Unit Billing report with Data Warehouse.

           Role: Collaborated with Cerner and LIS to create an easier way for Reference Technologists to bill for antigen negative units. Designed report to include patient specifics required for proper effective manual billing that may lead to automated billing.
