I had worked at Camp Anna Behrens previously in 2011 and 2012. I still kept in touch with some of the staff and repeatedly came back on a volunteer basis during some weekends or when there was an especially large group. The camp director, whom I had worked closely with before, called me and asked me to come help, due to a shortage of unit leaders and I agreed.
I worked there for a couple weeks as unit leader so in addition to normal camp counselor duties like assisting in leading activities and teaching the girls skills to earn badges, I was also in charge of deciding what tasks would be done in order for the girls to earn badges, as well as decide activities for the week and coordinate with other units to do large group activities. I was also responsible for assigning jobs to the girls and guiding them to plan their own activities. I was also to set an example for other unit staff or discipline them if necessary. I decided when others in my unit would get breaks.I had to be in charge of medical information for my unit, like allergies and medications,as well as first aid kits, epipens, and inhalers.
As riding staff, I assisted and led in educating girls between the ages of six and eighteen on proper western horsemanship, varying what was taught based on the level of the program they were in and their own individual skills if the size of a session permitted. I worked both in the arena with girls on the horses and in the barn, where girls were taught about horses, the history of riding, parts of the horse and tack, as well as covering topics if the program required it.In addition to being riding staff, due to a limited staff size I also worked as a general counselor. I was with girls and helped teach activities varying from arts and crafts to boating to skills the girls needed to earn badges--such as fire building, knife safety, and maps and compass. If I was not required for horses or assigned to a unit of girls, I was often working in the kitchen, assisting the staff in doing dishes, so they could be done faster. I worked this position for the summer of 2011 and 2012.
