With an academic background in public policy, agricultural and resource economics and education, and work experience in communications and the Spanish language, I currently teach a range of courses in Spanish, Social studies, English and Environmental Studies to secondary school students in two public high schools.
I am in my second year co-teaching interdisciplinary seminars in Lumen. My areas of expertise include Social Studies, English and Environmental Studies. I also teach the Lumen Reading Workshop, new for 2012-13.
I have taught AP Spanish 5 since 2008, and Spanish 1 starting this year (2012-13). I also Heritage Spanish for native speakers when enrollments permit (four classes between 2009 and 2011).
I taught my two children all subjects from pre-K through 7th grade. I also taught a variety of group classes for home schoolers, including four years of Spanish, three years of Writing Workshop, two years of Junior Great Books, and one semester each of Microeconomics and the Civil Rights Movement.
I did communications for a the Wisconsin Integrated Cropping Systems Trial, a sustainable agriculture initiative jointly run by Michael Fields and UW-Madison. I produced project publications, wrote op ed and feature articles for a variety of publications, produced radio actualities, developed media strategies and conducted media campaigns, wrote and edited newsletters, and coordinated closely with project participants (farmers, researchers and others) to shape and disseminate the messages coming out of the project. I also wrote several successful grant proposals and helped organize public outreach events.
I edited the organization's newsletter, wrote grant proposals, did community organizing and outreach on the topic of agricultural biotechnology, organized the Spreading Success Seminar (a conference for sustainable agriculture activists), did varied media work and produced a variety of publications on sustainable agriculture. I was a contributor to a sustainable agriculture curriculum published by Wisconsin's Department of Public Instruction.
I developed and implemented a wide range of environmental education initiatives. I developed original curriculum materials on local flora and fauna and environmental issues, which I used in five area schools. I conducted with a group of local high schoolers a study of local pesticide use. I collaborated with the local dairy plant, cooperative and Community Development Association to address environmental issues such as the lack of local garbage disposal facilities and pesticide misuse.
I was hired on a consultant basis to evaluate project proposals in environmental education and organic agriculture.
