I worked on the move crew, roof control when needed, cleaned and dusted the section. I operated the rail car, supplying the section and moving personnel within the mine. We also laid track and did repairs on the rail system. Maintained the conveyor belts, making splices and shoveling belt heads.
I was the only volunteer to be on the mine rescue team. I was certified Mine Rescue Team Member on February 8, 2013. We were responsible for the coverage of 6 mines. I went to training and came back and worked my regular shift on the move crew
I was responsible for roof control, hauling supplies to the section by a scoop. Set roof jacks and timbers throughout the mines. Dorothy #3 mine had a bad top and it required a lot of attention. Maintained the airways, conveyor system and traveled with the mine inspectors to take car of any violations on the spot. I would correct the issue and have the violation abated before the inspectors completed their inspection.
I worked on the production section operating the scoop, shuttle car and roof bolting before I was given the out by position. I did anything needed to produce coal so the company could meet their contract obligations. Frank Pearson was the operator of Dorothy #3 in Prenter, WV. We helped supply coal for Patriot Coal at the Prep Plant in Prenter, WV.
I am a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer and Crematory. I supervised 15 employees, hired and trained employees, maintained customer care. I managed 3 funeral homes in the Beckley, WV area. I resigned to pursue a career in the mining industry so I could have medical coverage for my family and retirement benefits. I had worked for 20 years in the death care industry and I needed a change in my life. The funeral home required me to work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I was on call everyday to take care of 3 locations in the Beckley area. If I wasn't at one of the locations, I would be at home and direct employees by telephone since I was the General Manager of Operations for 3 locations.
