Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at the Cary Institute for Ecosystem Studies NSF funded research program.
Designed and performed an independent research project under mentorship of Dr.Kara Belinsky concerning the effects of traffic noise on veery (Catharus fuscescens) singing behavior and number of song masking events in different habitats on the Cary Institute property.
Independently collected song samples in the field.
Conducted song analysis in Raven Pro 1.4 software.
Performed statistical analysis in JMP.
Wrote a scientific paper.
Presented results at a formal symposium.
Investigation into veery singing behavior; using a comprehensive collection of veery song samples taken in 2009, we are categorizing different "note" types and comparing intra-specific similarities in songs.
Plant Ecophysiology (Spring 2014): Experience in use of: LICOR-6400, leaf pressure chamber, specific leaf area and stomatal density tests, Image-J, in-depth tree phenology monitoring.
Instrumental Techniques (Fall 2014): Experience in use of: UV-vis, Fluorometer, atomic emissions spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, high pressure liquid chromatography, atomic force microscopy.
Determining forest community composition and structure.
Identifying soil texture, type, and invertebrate communities.
Dendochronology to assess and calculate tree growth rates and ages.
Evaluating water infiltration rates on different land cover surface types.
Data analysis in Microsoft Excel.
Identification of northeastern United States hard and softwood tree species.
Environmental Geochemical Science (Fall 2013): Performed lake sedimentary coring.
Performed flame atopic absorption spectroscopy for lead presence in sediment samples.
