I worked in Fixed Income product control, in the Structured Credit team.
My responsibilities in the team included the reconciliation of the daily profit and loss account produced by the trading desk, including the exotics side of the business.
This requires an understanding of complex financial products.
I was involved in the review of new complex deals, analysing how the desk have generated their P&L and producing daily, monthly and quarterly commentary to Senior Management.
My role also involved analysing trade valuations and reserves as well as the risk profile of the desk.
I monitored the desks FX exposure and provided this to them daily so they could hedge their risk accordingly.
I participated in a monthly review process, discussing balance sheet items with management and the business.
I also produced a monthly valuations pack to give management an insight into reserves, reserving policies and comments on moves month on month.

Whilst working in financial control I focused on Nomura's regulated bank entity.
I was responsible for analysing the bank's balance sheet providing comments to management on monthly moves, highlighting moves within each different product type.
I was also responsible for preparing different reporting schedules to send internally to Tokyo and externally to the Bank of England and the FSA.
I was responsible for posting journals to the ledger to re-class balances to account for differences between UK and US GAAP.
I worked closely with MIS and product control to ensure that balance sheet was accurate for reporting purposes and co-ordinated with the reporting team in India on a daily basis.
I organised monthly meetings for the non-exec committee, liasing with various departments.
I worked on projects aimed at increasing the efficiency of the reporting process so that all of the deadlines were met on time.
This required knowledge of Excel and VBA.

As a placement student I worked within the flow rates product control team.
I was responsible for reconciling the daily P&L for the Government bond trading desk and the debt new issues desk.
One of my key roles was to 'snap' the rates every day at 4.15pm for the entire bank and ensure they were correct before saving them so that the trading desks could then value their EOD risk.
Whilst working in the Rates team I was exposed to vanilla financial products and how a bond trading desk operates.
I was in regular contact with different operations teams including settlements and the coupon team.
I also used Bloomberg to view trade details.

When I left school I passed my flying aptitude tests and my Commission's board, subsequently I joined the Royal Navy as an Observer.
I undertook officer training at Britania Royal Naval College.
Training involved leadership development, drill, physical training, lectures and assessed command exercises.
