Professional Summary

I am a self-taught, internationally published photographer from the Boston area. After graduating with a BA in English from the University of New Hampshire in 2003, my parents gifted me with my first digital camera to photograph bands. I photographed thousands of bands, concentrating on both live and promotional photos and occasionally for album covers). In 2009 I started shooting portraits of people, and ultimately decided to concentrate my focus on photographing models. My trademark of shooting elaborate scenes in abandoned buildings (when I find a location, I quite literally spends hours cleaning up and restoring it to what it may have looked like, paying attention to the smallest details such as placement of items in the room) eventually got me arrested in August 2014. I describe this particular event as "the best thing to ever happen to me", after national news outlets picked up the story. I currently travel the US, photographing people for various projects. Despite having a BA in English, I've always had quite a hard time expressing myself externally. If I had to explain myself in one sentence, it would read something like "An incredibly introverted, awkward wallflower". In 2011, my father passed away unexpectedly. My world during/after this event contributed to what is seen in my portfolio today. I had feelings and experiences that I would and could never build into words. I realized I had two choices: drown in my own darkness and succumb to depression or push on and fully submerge myself in telling an ongoing story of my internal struggles. I strive to produce photos that tell a story- that connect with the viewer on a personal level. I like to find locations that were abandoned before any sort of technological age, typically locations with relics left in them from 1980 and earlier (the older, the better). A feeling of "future- past". I ultimately strive to present my photos as readable images.

I am a:

  • Dedicated Photographer who exhibits a true love for the craft, art and science of the photography process. Inspires others with creative insight and enthusiasm.
  • Photographer who is continually inspired by people from all walks of life, especially in urban scenes. Brings international experience, as well as advanced knowledge from continued coursework.

  • Photographer who specializes in celebrity and model photo shoots. Gives quality artistic direction to produce top quality results.

References
  • Karen is a constant inspiration and adoration to me. Not only is she somehow DAILY improving on her craft, art, and business but she is just stunning the world, even if you don't enjoy her main genre, which is what she loves, she also is such a talented photographer, seamstress, stylist, etc etc etc! She will photograph your wedding in a way you will never forget, your beautiful children, any event. This girl is incredible, aside from me purchasing her artwork for my whole family she is respecting and seeing what every client wants and needs. Karen is an inspiration. And aside from being serious about her work, she will be able to make you laugh. " Krystal Layton, Self employed, Cannibalized Photography, managed Karen at Karen Jerzyk Photography
  • Karen has done an amazing job of separating herself from the myriad of photographers on this planet. One look at her work and you will realize that she is a unique talent. Her creativity and work ethic are all in her pictures, which always seem to fascinate me." Mike Hsu, was with another company when working with Karen at Karen Jerzyk Photography
  • Karen consistently provided excellent, professional photography for an indie record label that often needed fast turnaround and the biggest bang-for-the-buck. Plus, plenty to choose from... She provided all of that, along with a very open-minded approach many, many times. There was a reason we brought her into the picture time and time again, and she never disappointed." Robert Deutsch, was Karen's client
  • Karen creates photos with the true purpose of engaging the viewer in a way that photographic artistry is meant to be. Her creativity quickly grasps the eye and emotions of the art enthusiast . She is a pleasant and low key individual with a flair for the absurd, this being said as a compliment and would be an asset to any group focusing on producing meaningful photos." Cheryl LeBlanc, worked with Karen at Karen Jerzyk Photography
