I am an educator. As a personal trainer, I want people to know how their bodies work, and how to maintain a healthy lifestyle. As a riding instructor, I want people to learn how to interact with the horse on a physical, mental and emotional level. But my general objective is to help others reach their own goals, whether it is to build confidence, be healthier, or to just know a little bit more, and the way to help them do that is through education and teaching.
Any personal trainer can give a client some exercises and watch as the exercises are performed. A good trainer will teach a meaningful program that has purpose and direction and is based on current research, and will work towards a client's personal goals. I am a good trainer. I want my clients to reach and exceed their personal fitness and health goals, and I want to fix their bodies so they can move with strength, balance, and coordination.
What I do specifically as a personal trainer :
I started working as a contracted personal trainer at Fit 212 in 2012 at their Falmouth location. When they built the Westbrook location, they hired me as manager, a position with increasing responsibilities as the facility evolves. My current responsibilities include: helping and assisting clientèle, personal training, group exercise instructor, marketing, and general maintenance. Future responsibilities include: managing staff, and managing/implementing programs.
When I started working at the University of Southern Maine as their Spinning instructor, the class only had two participants. However, in the two years that I have been there, I have helped build the program back to where classes are full and remain filled throughout the school semesters. My participants come to my class knowing that they're going to get a workout; I will also make sure that by the end of the semester, they have improved their aerobic endurance, strength, pedal stroke economy, and have learned something specific to what we're doing. I know they are reaching their goals because I can see it and they tell me; by the end of the semester, everyone is able to finish a high intensity lactic threshold class where they are all maintaining heart rates between 80-85% for the majority of class.
Specific tasks include:
Internship, Fit 212, 2012
Internship , Hink Personal Training, 2012
This internship was a great opportunity for me. It provided excellent insight into the world of fitness and how to train clients based on functional training methods. My intern supervisor had an extensive background in exercise physiology, specialized in training post-rehab (coming from physical therapy) clients, had lots of experience training several types of different populations such as sport specific athletes, pregnancy, cardiac patients, along with many others. From him I learned much about functional training and functional movement screening as well as post-rehab training and training specific special populations; and a lot of my time outside of the gym was used researching case studies, and researching the current articles in sports medicine.
