My journey as a Peer Support Specialist began in August 2015 after becoming certified in July 2015 with Horizon Healthcare. My roles and responsibilities as an active member of the Peer Support Team consist of providing peer support services to consumers recovering from serious mental illness plus Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse issues in a respite facility. This includes 1) acting as a role model to those stationed at the respite home, 2) exhibit competency in personal recovery by sharing my stories of mental illness along with AODA issues and 3) using coping skills to assist respite home residents. I am also responsible for providing consumer information and peer support for clients in an outpatient setting. My purpose is to assist the consumer in regaining their independence within the community by developing Wellness Recovery Action Plans and assist with articulating personal goals which help to manage concerns with mental health along with Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse.
I began my pharmacy career in 2008 at Veterans Administration Medical Center. In my role as a Pharmacy Technician, my responsibilities included knowing the principles and processes for providing Veteran services. This includes completing veteran's needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluating veteran satisfaction. I perform administrative and clerical duties that required me to use departmental procedures and systems such as MS Word, MS Outlook and, MS Excel, managing files and records using office equipment (fax & copy machines), and designing forms. Working in outpatient with veterans requires using:
• Problem-solving and decision-making skills.
• Actively listen and pay attention to what others are saying; taking time to understand the points being made for resolutions.
• Asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
• Talking to others to convey information effectively.
From 2001-2008 I held a position as a Paraprofessional with Milwaukee Public Schools as a member of the Interdisciplinary team. My primary responsibility was to assist Teachers and other staff members with students who learned in a rehabilitative classroom environment. I worked with students who had a mild to moderate Emotional Behavior Disorder, learning disabilities, and health issues (i.e. AIDS, Epilepsy, etc.). I performed a variety of supportive tasks that included teaching students daily life skills, how to self-assess and monitor their progress using the Individualized Education Program (IEP). In facilitating, I discussed ways to use effective coping strategies and self-help strategies based on the student's individual goals. I also facilitated individual and group sessions. During sessions I would share my life stories and experience of coping with life's challenges that occur on any given day. I would use personal experiences students could relate to as a means of modeling different ways to cope with stressful or informal events. These examples included difficulty adapting, and responding to counsel. Other leadership duties performed include:
• Managing transportation assignments for over a thousand students for two years.
• Supervised the Year book Club to develop the annual year book.
• Managed and supervised the Freshman Boys Basketball Team as Head Coach for two years.
My duties were to prepare large and small parenterals with additives and other extemporaneous sterile products and stock medications; Utilize the computerized pharmacy system for ordering patient IV's; Handle the daily filling of patient medication drawers for the unit dose system; Package medications as needed; Assist the Staff Pharmacist by filling
prescriptions, Physician orders, and refill orders; communicate with Nursing and other staff members for problem solving throughout the Hospital.
