Carriage Tours of Memphis is a privately owned small business that provides horse-drawn carriage tours in Downtown Memphis as well as servicing private events such as weddings and funerals throughout the Mid-South area. As owner and manager of the company for many years now, I have been responsible for every aspect of the business including managing employees, the care of 17 horses, communications and bookings with customers, and money management. Here are just a few examples of my ongoing responsibilities:
*Care and maintenance of the horses, immediately handling any emergencies or incidents that may threaten the horses' health. Our horses are very well cared for, conditioned, and loved, and are often complemented as they work in the public.
*Scheduling and assignment of horse and carriage to appropriate drivers according to skill level, weather conditions, and to accommodate reservations. We have up to a dozen drivers working on a daily basis.
*Supervision of 10-15 employees to ensure safety and compliance. Our turnover rate of drivers is the lowest of any company in the city, and we rarely have drivers with less than three years of professional experience. Several have been with our company ten years or more.
*Answering phone and email requests for information and dispatch of carriages for pick ups.
*Booking reservations and drafting contracts for special events with private customers as well as event coordinators and sales directors within the tour industry.
*Logistical planning to organize multiple carriages both downtown and traveling to other cities to ensure safe and timely arrival for reservations.
*Purchasing required materials for upkeep of horses and carriages.
*Checking daily sales logs and making bank and credit card deposits.
*Bookkeeping and accounting, filing and paying taxes.
*Compliance with City and State regulations, renewals of industry licenses, permits and insurance.
*Sales and marketing strategies to boost income and develop drivers into more effective salespeople. The company's sales have steadily increased every year despite the fluctuations in the economy and enough competing companies to fill every available permit space allowed by the City.
*Participation in Downtown Safety and Traffic Task Force to address issues facing the Downtown Memphis tourism and entertainment district.
*Communication with City Permits Office and Entertainment District Police Precinct to address concerns.
*Horse-drawn carriage tour operator
*Managed employee scheduling and supervision
*Hiring and training new drivers
*Booking and execution of reservations
*Purchasing and training horses
*Daily care and maintenance of horses
*Organized and maintained law libraries, documents and case files.
*Photocopied all correspondence, documents and other printed materials.
*Mailed and arranged for delivery of legal correspondence to clients, witnesses and court officials.
*Composed and revised legal documents, including letters, depositions and court documents.
*Processed summonses, subpoenas and complaints.
