After graduating from Mason High School and passing the Teacher Academy course, I decided to major in Middle Childhood Education at Miami University. After tutoring multiple students at different grade and ability levels, developing my Teacher Academy portfolio, and completing education courses at Miami, I know that education is my passion.
As a part of an educational psychology class, each Miami student is assigned to mentor a Talawanda High School student in the "at risk" category, meaning at risk of dropping out of school. Not only do we help the students complete their work, but mentor them socially with their emotional conflicts.
To obtain the credit and pass the course, Teacher Academy students are required to student teach in three different placements: early education, middle education, and secondary education. During my senior year of high school I was placed in a first grade class, a seventh grade Language Arts class, and an eleventh grade honors English class, where I both observed teaching technique and worked with students one on one and in the whole-class setting.
While volunteering as a tutor for 5th grade students, I worked the most with a student with learning disabilities and was able to help him complete his work and study in a more efficient manner.
During my junior and senior year of high school, I received the opportunity through the Teacher Academy Program to tutor elementary students from Japan. The young students needed extra attention and support, specifically regarding reading and writing.
