I am switching from active duty Air Force to the Air National Guard while I complete school.
I have worked in the Emergency Department at Joint Base Langley-Eustis for over 3 years. After completing my training I have been able to use my skills on a daily basis. Air Force medics are able to do much more than our civilian counterparts. As a medic, I work as an LPN & EMT with a higher scope of practice. I am able to administer drugs and place IV/IO's. I am also trained specifically in trauma and able to place chest tubes, needle decompression, and suture which are doctor skills.
Not only have I been a Emergency Floor shift leader, but I have also ran a deployed medical facility in the Middle East.
I worked for Shawn Kanouse who sub-contracted for Michigan's forestry and Department of Natural Resources. I built log systems to stop riverbank erosion, islands and fish habitat. I ran a chainsaw to selectively cut portions of Michigan State land for growth and development. The cut off's also provided breeding grounds for a rare butterfly known as Mitchell's satyr. We removed natural dams caused by storms and/or beaver. Plowed and planted fields to support wild life and Michigan hunters.
I worked for West Michigan Cable Contracting as a heavy machinery operator for one summer while home from college. I mainly worked as a locater in front of a directional drill. I supervised my crew of five people and maintained over $100k in equipment. We placed both fiber optic cable and gas main piping.
I worked as a Laborer for the Newaygo County Road Commission starting the Spring I graduated High School. The position was geared for college students who needed a summer (seasonal) job. Over the three summers I worked there I was able to develop new skills such as: using light and heavy equipment, build new roads and maintain old roads. I have used front end loaders, backhoe, tractors, dump-truck, brush chopper, chainsaw, etc. My primary job was to fill holes and maintain the old infrastructure of the county roads.
I currently have 90 credits toward my Bachelor in Pre-Physician Assistant studies with intent to apply to a Physician Assistant program by 2015.
I have my Associates of Applied Science concentration in Allied Health. I use this degree along with my National Registry Emergency Medical Technician and Basic Life Saving certifications to serve as a Combat Medic in the United States Air Force.
I have volunteered over 200 hours since I have been in the Air Force doing things such as: church related functions, sorting mail in a deployed locations, organizing litter clean up and teaching CPR to local school teachers. I have also provided medical coverage for several Security Forces events, and acted as a solo medic for an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.
