My responsibilities included routine and Stat testing with weekly rotation to all sections of the laboratory. This included Chemistry, Urinalysis, Hematology, Blood Bank, Serology/Immunology and Microbiology. Phlebotomy duties were also a large part of my job description and were divided between inpatient, outpatient and nursing home services.
Performance and review of quality control assays was required in all areas on a daily basis. I participated in NYS DOH proficiency testing at assigned intervals. I also performed regular routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory instrumentation as required.
I performed routine and Stat laboratory testing within the Hematology laboratory exclusively. I was responsible for Hematology, Coagulation and routine Urinalysis testing in a high volume tertiary care facility with a thriving Hematology and Oncology practice.
I made a transition to the Special Hematology laboratory for the last 5 years of my employment at the medical center. I was involved in special coagulation testing, platelet aggregation studies , Elisa testing for Heparin induced Thrombocytopenia and bone marrow special staining procedures.
My education continued while working full time and I was able to meet NYS Department of Health's minimum requirements for classification as a Medical technologist and was promoted in 1999.
I also was a key operator for the Beckman Coulter cellular analysis systems. I performed maintenance and troubleshooting activities on a regular basis. I was sent for special training on three of the legacy systems which included S+, S+4 and Gen S models.
In 1988 I participated as part of the implementation team for our new laboratory information system. This include training at Sunquest Information System's facilities in Tuscon Arizona.
I was responsible for a great deal of the management of day to day operation of the Hematology laboratory. This included supervision of the testing staff as well as performance of bench testing in the Routine and Special hematology and coagulation laboratory sections. I performed QA checks for adherence to standard operating procedures and quality control standards.
The job required management of quality control data as well as participation in Inter-lab Quality assurance programs. I was responsible for semi annual data collection of instrument to instrument reproducibility studies. I also performed calibration and linearity studies as required for compliance to NYS DOH regulations.
I acted as the primary preceptor for training of all new employees and students in the Hematology laboratory. This included direct observation and documentation of ongoing competency assessment for all staff.
I was the key operator for the Beckman Coulter cellular Analysis systems. I went to operator training schools for both the LH 750 and DxH testing platforms. I was named troubleshooter of the year by the Beckman Coulter field service manager in 2010.
