I worked as a generalist in the laboratory primarily on the evening and night shifts. On the night shift I worked alone and was responsible for drawing blood, all testing and reporting of all results for the patients. On the evening shift the staffing included another technician and a phlebotomist. The departments I was responsible for were hematology, chemistry, serology, blood bank, and some microbiology at this facility. This lab did not have a computer system at this time and, as always, it was very important to report accurate results paying very close attention to detail. There was daily maintenance including calibrations and quality control as well as any troubleshooting of analyzers and systems as deemed necessary. The experience in this position was wonderful preparation for the next position I was interested in pursuing.
During the Spring semester I help teach the immunohematology lab. As some of the methods for testing and technology have advanced in the laboratory setting, I introduce the students to the newest system for blood bank micro testing. This allows the students to have an understanding of the newest state of the art testing before they embark on their clinical rotations out into the area hospitals.
After completion of Medical Technology program at Belleville Area College, I passed my certification testing. I am certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
One of my passions and favorite pastimes is helping others when I can. I volunteer and help civic groups whenever there is an event where I can lend a hand. I also sit on the board of our community Leu Civic Center which is a proud United Way Agency. I take pride in doing what I can to help better the lives of others.
