As a veteran speechwriter, I get paid to put words into the mouths of powerful men and women -- C-suite executives, salespeople, corporate spokespeople and fund raisers -- people who want to become better public speakers and small talkers, so they make good impressions everywhere they go. I bring something most speechwriters don't; as an award-winning speaker myself, I can help executive boost both their platform skills AND their content.
Speechwriter, author, presentation coach and consultant.
Kent College of Law
Observed and evaluated Continuing Legal Education sessions, then designed and led a presentation skills workshop for CLE presenters (attorneys, judges, faculty, board members) on: "The Three B's of Introductions: Be Compelling, Be Current & Be Quick about It;" "Take the Panic Out of Panels: Become a Master Moderator and a Q&A Genius," and; "The Person Who DOES More Learns More: Smart Ways to Make Your Sessions Interactive." Consulted with Critical Thinking & Strategic Communication faculty to evaluate 140 MBA student "TED" Talks, as part of an executive team, to prepare students for interviews and presentations at WashU and beyond. (2014-2015)
Ungerboeck Software International
Interviewed the event-planning software giant's co-founder, whom colleagues described as "the female Steve Jobs", over the last 37 days of her life, as she, like Jobs, battled pancreatic cancer. I interviewed family members and colleagues, then authored her memoir -- Big Heart, Big Shoes, Big Business -- in time for release on the first anniversary of her death. (September 2015)
The Parliament of the World's Religions -- Integrating Spirituality with Organizational Leadership (ISOL)

Served as a director and/or officer on a number of area boards and committees (SOAR, Fourth Presbyterian Church, 535 N. Michigan Condo Association, The Bodhi Center Tech Team, DuPage Center for Spiritual Living, The Institute of Noetic Sciences, the ALS Foundation of Chicago, etc.) speaking to nonprofit audiences and producing marketing materials to support various causes while researching and writing my first book.
I blessed stillborn babies, comforted patients and families in the midst of dire diagnoses and deaths, handled the delicate task of requesting organ donations, explained and helped patients complete Advance Directives, prepared bodies for viewing, conducted worship services and generally stood in as "the non-anxious presence" in the room.
Wrote speeches and corporate scripts and delivered presentation training to top executives, sales people and spokespeople at Edward Jones Investments, Clark Refining & Marketing, St. Louis District Dairy Council, The American Soybean Association, Boys & Girls Town of Missouri, Boston Market/The St. Louis Rams, The Institute of Internal Auditors, AARP, the National Center for Nonprofit Boards, St. Louis Equity Fund, Technology Gateway Alliance, Monsanto, Continental Baking Company, Realtors Land Institute and many others.
My sister, Cathy Standing Dunkin, and I always said, if we ended up in the same city long enough, we would start our own full-service public relations agency. In 1991, we did. We attracted clients that included ConAgra, Continental Baking Company, Monsanto, St. Louis Equity Fund, AARP and a host of others. I wrote speeches and marketing/media materials and pitched media, while Cathy ran the firm and focused on attracting new business. After a year, she bought out my half, and I launched STANDING Ovations, so I could focus on raising my daughter and doing the work I loved most -- speechwriting.
