I gained my BCUR Bachelor of Nursing Degree in 2000 (General, Psychiatric, Community and Midwifery) from Stellenbosch University in South Africa. I went on to gain registration with the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council in the United Kingdom) in 2002. In England i was fortunate enough to work in Acute Medicine for approximately 1 year and then obtained valuable experience in an Outpatient Department servicing patients with a wide range of conditions including plastic surgery, orthopedics, ENT, pediatrics to name but a few. This was over approximately 6 years.
Since our arrival in Ann Arbor Michigan, i have completed training to volunteer with the Make a Wish Foundation. More recently I completed Birth Doula training provided by Dona Doulas. This was with the intention of volunteering on their Dial-a-Doula program at U of M hospital once up and running. I am currently working on my Child Birth Education course through CAPPA.

Completed training in order to work as a Wish Granting Volunteer for the Make a Wish Foundation in Michigan.
Volunteer duties include meeting with families who have a child that will be having a wish granted - getting detailed information from the child about their desired wish, paper work completion, any planning of events such as going away or welcome home parties. Volunteer duties also include helping with various fund raising events.
New Hall Hospital is one of Wiltshire's leading private hospitals with an excellent reputation for delivering high quality healthcare treatments and services. Our Outpatient Department had a range of plastic surgery, orthopedic, ENT, vascular, cardiac, pediatric and psychiatric and women's health clients.
As a registered nurse in this department my duties consisted of, but were not limited to, the following:
- Wound management, assessment, dressing changes
- Suture removal
- Phlebotomy
- pre-operative assessment
- Assistance during minor operative procedures
- Performing hearing tests
- Liasing with other health care professionals and Doctors with regards to patient care
- At all times delivering excellent patient and client care and services
In this Acute Medical Ward I gained valuable experience working with acutely ill patients. On commencement in this ward I worked under supervision until I was officially entered onto the register in the United Kingdom which was in January 2002. My duties included, but were not limited to the following:
- Full personal care of patients unable to do so for themselves
- Recorded patients' medical history, vital statistics and test results in medical records.
- Assisted patients with multiple chronic diagnoses including COPD and asthma.
- Accurately documented all elements of nursing assessment, treatments, medications, discharge instructions and follow-up care.
- Took and recorded patients' temperature, pulse and blood pressure.
- Partnered with team of Registered Nurses to ensure over all well-being of all patients.
- Coordinated with doctors and registered nurses to develop care plans for patients.
- Tested glucose and administered injections.
- Maintained patient charts and confidential files.
- Acted as patient advocate and implemented total patient care through a team nursing process covering 8-10 high acuity patients per shift
- Completed mandatory training as required by management such as CPR, manual handling, safe operation of various equipment used on the ward.
