LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST
Professional Summary
Leaving the classroom ten years ago to become a Library Media Specialist, has been a challenging and extremely rewarding experience. I now have an impact on an entire school where I can do what I love, read and share books! With continuous changes and trends in education, I keep on top of issues by attending and participating in trainings, particularly technology, where I assist students and staff. Over the years, the library program has evolved to where librarians train teachers so that they can better teach their students. Since I am committed to the faculty that I work with, I plan with them to offer my expertise. In 2007, I became a National Board Certified Teacher in Library Media so I could better enhance my teaching methods. Being the Library Media Specialist in two elementary schools and one middle school in Virginia Beach has been very gratifying.
My personal goals are to assist students in finding literature that they enjoy, which leads to a love for reading and will attribute to life-long learning. One of my objectives is getting boys to read. This began eleven years ago when I wrote my post graduate paper on motivating boys to read, after realizing that they are generally harder to hook into reading. I keep current with book series and have my students to participate in surveys about their reading preferences. It is my desire to make sure each and every student is engaged in learning. I use a good portion of my budget toward purchasing those materials which are age and level appropriate, and of high interest. My role as a library media specialist is to also incorporate the use of technology, from demonstrating new software programs to researching topics and citing sources.

Achievements:
  • National Board Certified Teacher in Library Media 2007 (Early childhood- grade 12)
  • Received a certificate of recognition for Effective Integration of Technology
  • Taught a professional development course to other VBCPS librarians on starting book clubs
