I have been in the medical field, primarily hospice and home health for the past 27 years. I have worked in the Samaritan health system for 25 years and in June, 2012 accepted a position as the intake coordinator for Samaritan Evergreen Hospice. Prior to that, I was the clerical specialist for hospice as well as home health. My current position involves coordinating patient referrals for both our inpatient and outpatient hospice. I am very organized, detail oriented, motivated and driven to do a good job in a timely manner. I am able to do this with multiple interruptions and feel that this skill is very useful in this type of position. We are a very team oriented facility, and I thoroughly enjoy being able to assist the referral sources, staff, patient and families.
I completed the certified medical assisting program through Chemeketa in 1983.
In this position, I am responsible for taking all new hospice patient referrals which involves communication with hospitals, physicans, nursing facilities, patients and families. I prepare the patient's information, code the diagnosis, verify insurance and obtain authorizations, coordinate equipment delivery, and prepare the referral for the staff. I am proficient in the hospice computer programs as well as experience with Access and Excel. I deal with multiple phone calls which routinely involve preparing medication refills, ordering equipment, and dealing with various patient/family questions that arise. I coordinate the patient information needed for weekly staff meetings ensuring that all pertinent information is available for each patient being discussed. I am responsible for maintaining the patient cost database which include verification of medication, equipment, laboratory, and transportation invoices. My duties are quite varied and also include filing, chart audits, compiling questionnaire results, and staff meeting minutes.
Over the past 25 years, my title as clerical specialist has stayed the same, but the role has changed over the course of time. This position involved phones, filing, maintaining and auditing the patient's charts while following Medicare rules, entering services charges, meeting minutes, management of patient charge database, and various other tasks which were all completed while managing multiple interruptions.
