My foremost responsibility was to provide excellent customer service to customers. This included learning about the local sites of interest and being able to give directions to these places, how to sport fish and catch crab and shellfish in the bay, knowing the local hotels and restaurants as well as what kind of services they offer, and other information frequently asked by tourists visiting the coast so I could provide an accurate and helpful answer suited to the individual or individuals. In addition to selling groceries, taking food orders and making the food to their specification, and renting out movies, the market also sold fishing and crabbing licenses. Because of this I became well versed in Oregon's laws regulating this industry as I need to determine whether the customers were eligible to get a license , taking note of things such as their age, state of residence, what type of fishing they planned on doing, and explaining the laws and regulations to them in detail and ensuring that the consumers understood the laws, regulations, and the penalties for choosing not to follow them, for example that if an adult is accompanying others on a fishing trip but doesn’t plan to participate, they are not allowed to even hold a fishing pole for someone else unless they have a fishing license in their name and that it is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of up to $1000 for anyone found to be fishing without the proper permit. The crabbing and shell fishing regulations and licenses are separate from angling and ensuring that the customer understood the rules and restrictions on crab and shellfish and the reason these are in place is crucial to the continued survival of the local Dungeness crab species. It was also important that I kept myself up to date on the state of the algal bloom in the ocean as it contaminates all the mollusks, making anyone who eats the clams, mussels, and oysters out of the affected area extremely ill and I needed to be able to advise anyone purchasing a permit that it isn’t safe to consume them. We sold fishing gear as well and I had to learn how use them well enough to teach customers what they would need to have and how to use it. In addition to these duties, all cahiers were responsible for completing basic bookkeeping and balancing the till at the end of the morning shift and again in the evening at closing. This required printing a report from the register with the either the first shifts incoming dollar amounts or the whole day’s transaction history at the end of the workday. Since I was typically assigned the closing shift, I was most often responsible for completing the full day’s accounting, which meant making sure that the calculations and reports for both shifts were balanced out correctly and making any necessary adjustments to the previous shift’s figures. It is a small building but there were many different tasks as a wide array of items and services were available. The store is also incredibly busy in the summer months when tourist season is at its peak. I was required to multitask and re-prioritize constantly while also keeping track of legally necessary legal and financial documents for the business.Sought out training opportunities to enhance customer relationship abilities, trama-informed care, and knowledge of programs provided
